Wonderwerk is the creation of Andrew Lardy and Issamu Kamide, high school friends from Virginia. Their philosophy of low intervention and high innovation has garnered them raving fans from their California home to New York and Japan, to here in Ontario and beyond. Their name originates from a cave in South Africa that is believed to have the earliest sign of human cooking – a million-year-old hearth – where humans manipulated nature for enjoyment as much as sustenance. Their company name fits well with their spirit of experimentation and the thread of curiosity and craft that runs through every piece of their business. Their wines are delicious and well-crafted. The duo is also known for their fun and eye-catching label designs - we drink with our eyes first after all. Make no mistake though - these are serious wines (that don’t take themselves too seriously).

2022 MARINARA
Somewhere between pizza and pasta...
Marinara! is an evolving Italian red blend custom-fit for the red and white checkered tablecloth. This vintage is composed of Teroldego, Montepulciano, Zinfandel, and Grenache. Carbonic-macerated Montepulciano lays the primary foundation of bright plum/haw flake and tomato with a fine, powdery tannic structure. Teroldego contributes rich pigment, a moderate tannic structure, and complex earthy/animal notes. Zinfandel defines an acid-driven backbone with sour cherry notes. A minor fraction of plush Grenache adds a dash of concentration and strawberry fruit leather tones.

Marinara! is the JOYFUL FEELING of red sauce dinners with pasta, pizza, chicken and eggplant parm, melty mozzarella, etc. Not limited to Italian-American fare, Marinara! is a prime selection for all foods that are saucy, melty, or roasted.

2022 FREE YOUR MIND
Co-fermentation! The idea is to be more than the sum of the parts. At its core, Free Your Mind is an aromatic orange wine: a skin-fermented Riesling. When the Riesling is mid-way through fermentation, pressed carbonic Carignan is gradually blended in via daily pump-overs. Our goal is to conduct a layered extraction of Riesling skins in two phases:

1. a water matrix (low alcohol) extraction - Riesling on skins (<6% abv), no Carignan
2. an alcohol matrix extraction - Riesling on skins (>6% abv) with daily incorporation of
pressed carbonic Carignan (~12% abv)

Once the Carignan is completely married into the Riesling and the wine is pressed off of the Riesling skins, the resulting structure is a chillable red wine with novel complexity.

2021 FREE YOUR BODY
Orange wine! We dialed up the acidity and captured more texture this year as Free Your Body took a float down the Sacramento River and unlocked a new level in the Wonderwerk portfolio: the Clarksburg AVA. Here we found a chalky Chenin blanc to lay the structural foundation, mellowing the loud fruit tones of Sauvignon blanc and harmonizing with the elegance of Pinot gris. After a 21 day maceration (26 days for the Pinot gris), the grape skins were exhausted and the body was free to begin a new life as wine. Free Your Body is a light, bright, chalky-textured delicious orange wine.
